Meanings

  2. flag

Usage

Sanjaq is a word of Turkish origin, now dated in everyday use. It is heard mainly for the banners of zawiyas and saints, carried in procession during zerdas and traditional religious festivals. The plural is snajeq. In daily life, people rather say drapo or 3alem for a flag, especially the national flag. For an English speaker, it should not be treated as a simple synonym of "flag": the word evokes ceremony and heritage, and it is used mostly by older generations.

Example

khorjou snajeq fi zerda

“They brought out the banners during the zerda.”
