tarbiya تربية

Algerian Darja · noun

“tarbiya” (تربية) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning upbringing, good manners.

Meanings

  1. upbringing, good manners
  2. breeding (of animals)

Usage

Tarbiya refers above all to the upbringing received from parents, that is, politeness and good manners, and not schooling, which is rather called qraya. It is often used to judge someone: "3andou tarbiya" (he is well brought up), "ma3andouch tarbiya" (he is badly brought up). The compliment "tarbiya w akhlaq" (upbringing and morals) is very common. The word can also mean animal breeding, as in tarbiyat lmawachi. Beware of the false friend: "education" in the sense of schooling is translated by qraya, not tarbiya.

Example

had tfol 3andou tterbiya, ysellem 3la nnas ga3
