tfou تفوو

Algerian Darja · interjection

“tfou” (تفوو) is an interjection in Algerian Darja meaning expresses disgust or contempt.

Meanings

  1. expresses disgust or contempt
  2. damn, what bad luck

Usage

Tfou imitates the sound of spitting and expresses disgust, contempt or anger toward someone or something. It is also heard after bad luck, in the sense of "damn" or "what rotten luck". It can be drawn out for emphasis (tfouuu) or followed by a complement: tfou 3lik, "shame on you". The register is informal and often aggressive when aimed at a person; said to someone's face, it is a strong mark of contempt. For simple regret, people rather say khsara, "too bad".
