wa9ila واقيلا
Algerian Darja · adverb
“wa9ila” (واقيلا) is an adverb in Algerian Darja meaning maybe, probably.
Meanings
- maybe, probably
- it may be that
- no doubt, probably
Usage
Wa9ila expresses a supposition or a probability. It goes at the start of the sentence and directly introduces the clause: "wa9ila yji" (he may come), "wa9ila ma kanch" (maybe there isn't any). It is very common in speech, often with a hesitant or speculative tone. Its closest synonym is balak. It is not used on its own to answer a question with "maybe"; in that case one says "balak" or "ymken" instead. The word is informal and used throughout the country.
Example
واقيلا يجي غدوة
wa9ila yji ghodwa
“He'll maybe come tomorrow.”
