Usage

Y9alleb (imperative 9alleb) means to search by rummaging, by turning things over. One says y9alleb 3la, "to look for something", or y9alleb fi, "to rummage through": y9alleb fel khzana, "he is rummaging through the cupboard". In a shop, y9alleb sel3a describes someone examining the goods, often without buying. The original sense of "to turn over", like flipping a pancake or a mattress, is still alive. Do not confuse it with yaqleb or y9leb, "to overturn, to knock over", whose meaning is close but distinct. The register is everyday.
