yahder يهدر
Algerian Darja · verb
“yahder” (يهدر) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to speak, talk.
Meanings
- to speak, talk
- to talk about, mention
Usage
Yahder is the imperfective of hder, the basic verb for "to speak" in Algeria. It largely replaces tkellem, which sounds more formal. One says hder m3a, "to speak with someone", and hder 3la, "to talk about something". Negation is formed with ma…ch: ma yahderch, "he doesn't speak". The noun hedra means speech, discussion or manner of speaking: hedrtou mliha, "he speaks well". Bla hedra means "no arguing". Pitfall: in Standard Arabic, the root rather evokes waste or roaring.
Example
خويا يهدر بزاف فالتيليفون
khouya yahder bezzaf f'tilifoun
“My brother talks a lot on the phone.”
