ydbegh يدبغ
Algerian Darja · verb
“ydbegh” (يدبغ) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to dye, leave a lasting color.
Meanings
- to dye, leave a lasting color
- to tan (leather)
Usage
Ydbegh means "he dyes" or "he stains". It is used for a color that soaks into a material and does not wash out: a fabric that takes on the shade of another garment, hands colored by henna, a stubborn stain. The original meaning of tanning hides is still known, especially in traditional trades. The subject can be the person who dyes or the coloring substance itself, for example el 7enna dbeghet. The register is common. Pitfall: this verb does not correspond exactly to "to bleed color" (of a fabric), which stresses the loss of color. Ydbegh stresses on the contrary the color that stays.
Example
الحنة دبغت يديها
el 7enna dbeghet yediha
“The henna stained her hands.”
