ydèz يدز

Algerian Darja · verb

“ydèz” (يدز) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to send.

Meanings

  1. to send
  2. to push

Usage

Ydez, in the imperative dez, is the most common verb in Algeria for "to send". It is used for a message, a photo, a parcel or a person you send on an errand. It is often combined with a pronoun: dezli, "send me", dezlou, "send him". The original meaning, "to push", is still alive, for example for a door, a broken-down car or someone you jostle. The register is informal and very frequent, notably in online writing. Synonyms: yeb3ath, more neutral, and zifet, very informal. Pitfall: dez does not mean "to give".
