Meanings

  1. he thinks, he reflects
  2. he worries

Usage

Ykhammam is the third-person masculine singular imperfect of the verb khammam, a very common verb in Algeria meaning "to think, to reflect". It is constructed with "fi" or "'la": ykhammam fi khdemtou (he is thinking about his work). It easily slides toward the sense of "to fret", especially in "ykhammam bezzaf" (he worries too much). The derived noun is takhmam, "reflection". The imperative "khammam!" means "think!". The verb is colloquial but neutral and is used in all registers of conversation. It commonly replaces the Standard Arabic verb for "to think".
