yssaker يسكر
Algerian Darja · verb
“yssaker” (يسكر) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to close.
Meanings
- to close
- to close (by itself)
Usage
Ysakker is the imperfect of sakkar, "to close". It is used for a door, a window, a shop or a bottle. The participle msakkar means "closed". It is also used without an object, as in el bab ysakker wahdou, "the door closes by itself". It is a common synonym of ybellaa, which is more frequent in some regions. Beware of a homograph: the same Arabic spelling can be read yesker, "he gets drunk". The doubled k distinguishes the two words in speech but does not appear in writing.
Example
سكر الباب، راه البرد.
sakker el bab, rah el berd.
“Close the door, it's cold.”
