Meanings

Usage

Ysoufri is a borrowing from French "souffrir", fully integrated into darja conjugation: soufrit (I suffered), ysoufri (he suffers), rani nsoufri (I am suffering). It is very common in speech, especially in cities, to talk about physical pain, illness, poverty or a difficult situation. The register is familiar and neutral. One also says ysoufri m3a… (to suffer with, because of). The Arabic-origin equivalents are y3ani and yqasi, which are perceived as slightly more formal. Note: the word is not used in the sense of "to put up with someone".
