ywekkel يوكل
Algerian Darja · verb
“ywekkel” (يوكل) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to feed, give food to.
Meanings
- to feed, give food to
- to provide for (a family)
Usage
Ywekkel, pronounced with a w and a doubled k, is the causative form of kla ("to eat") and means "to make eat, to feed". It is said of a parent feeding a child, of someone feeding animals, or of a host treating guests to a meal. By extension, it can mean "to provide for, to support": ywekkel dar ("he supports the household"). There is a pitfall in writing: in Arabic script, the spelling يوكل is also used for yakoul / youkel ("he eats"). Context decides. For example, "يوكل رمضان" means "he is not fasting", not "he feeds".
