zayer زير
Algerian Darja · verb
“zayer” (زير) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to tighten, squeeze.
Meanings
- to tighten, squeeze
- to pull oneself together, take care
- to put pressure on someone
Usage
Zayyer means "to tighten": a screw, a belt or a knot (zayyer el boulon). The very common expression zayyer rouhek means "pull yourself together, make an effort, be serious." It is also used as an affectionate piece of advice: "take care of yourself, hang in there." With a person as object, zayyer can mean "to press someone, put them under pressure." The register is informal and neutral. The English gloss "wind" is misleading: the verb has nothing to do with wind.
Example
زيّر البولون مليح باش ما يطيحش
zayyer el boulon mlih bach ma ytihch
“Tighten the bolt well so it doesn't fall off.”
