3awwed عوّض

Moroccan Darija · verb

Meanings

  1. to compensate, make up for losses
  2. to replace someone or something
  3. to make up for (a delay, a loss)

Usage

3awwed means "to compensate" or "to replace". It is used for compensation (3awwedni, "he compensated me") or for replacement (3awwed blastou, "he replaced him"). The condolence or consolation formula Allah y3awwed 3lik means "may God compensate you for your loss". It is also said after something is lost or broken. The corresponding noun is t3wid, "compensation". Pitfall: do not confuse it with 3awed, without the doubled consonant, which means "to redo" or "to retell".
