3oboudiya عبودية

Moroccan Darija · noun

“3oboudiya” (عبودية) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning slavery.

Meanings

  1. slavery
  2. servitude, bondage (figurative)
  3. total submission to God (religious)

Usage

The word 3oboudiya comes from common Arabic and is used as is in darija. It is mostly used with the article, l3oboudiya. It is heard when talking about historical slavery, but more often in the figurative sense, to denounce a situation of exploitation: a poorly paid job, an abusive boss, a dependency. In that case it carries a nuance of complaint or indignation. In a religious context, it refers to the believer's submission to God, a positively valued sense, not a pejorative one. The register is rather formal or militant. In everyday conversation, people more often say "bhal l3bid" (like slaves) to express the same idea.

Example

هادي ماشي خدمة، هادي عبودية

hadi machi khedma, hadi 3oboudiya

“This isn't a job, it's slavery.”
