7chman حشمان
Moroccan Darija · adjective
“7chman” (حشمان) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning shy, embarrassed.
Meanings
- shy, embarrassed
- ashamed
Usage
7echman describes a person who is embarrassed, intimidated or ashamed. The feminine is 7echmana, the plural 7echmanin. The typical construction is 7echman men, "embarrassed in front of someone": rah 7echman menek means he is intimidated by you, without necessarily having done anything wrong. With 3la, it expresses shame about an act: 7echman 3la chnou dert. The word is very common, neutral in register, and not at all pejorative: being 7echman is often seen as a sign of good upbringing, especially in front of elders. The corresponding verb is 7chem, "to be ashamed, to be embarrassed".
Example
أنا حشمان بزّاف على شنو درت
ana 7chman bezzaf 3la chnou dert
“I'm really ashamed of what I did.”
