bardan بردان
Moroccan Darija · adjective
“bardan” (بردان) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning feeling cold.
Meanings
- feeling cold
- listless, half-hearted
Usage
Bardan describes a person who feels cold: ana bardan, "I'm cold". The key point is that in Moroccan Arabic one does not use a verb "to be" plus a noun but an agreeing adjective. So one says bardana in the feminine and bardanin in the plural. It is not used for an object or a cold drink; for that, one says bared, as in lma bared, "the water is cold". The opposite is sekhoun in the sense "feeling hot". In informal usage, bardan can also describe someone listless or unenthusiastic. This last sense is rarer and depends on context.
Example
سد الشرجم، أنا بردان
sedd cherjem, ana bardan
“Close the window, I'm cold.”
