Moroccan Darija · noun
“berbouch” (بربوش) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning snail.
Meanings
- snail
- snails cooked in spiced broth
Usage
The usual word for the snail, both the animal and the dish. Babbouch is sold mostly in the evening in the streets and squares of towns. The snails are cooked in a broth flavoured with herbs and spices. They are eaten from a bowl, with the broth drunk as well, which is reputed to be warming. The word is often used as a collective, with no plural marker: "kla l-babbouch" (he ate snails). The pronunciation varies by region and speaker (babbouch, bebbouch, berbouch). Do not confuse it with "belgha", the babouche (slipper), despite the similar-sounding word.
Example
