bida2i بدائي
Moroccan Darija · adjective
“bida2i” (بدائي) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning primitive, rudimentary.
Meanings
- primitive, rudimentary
- archaic, outdated
Usage
Bida2i comes from Standard Arabic. It is heard in somewhat polished speech, in the news or in discussions about history. In everyday use, it mostly serves to criticize methods or tools seen as rudimentary: tariqa bida2iya, "a primitive method". Its feminine is bida2iya. Applied to a person, it is pejorative and can offend, since it implies a lack of civilization. In casual conversation, people would rather say qdim, "old", for an object that is simply outdated.
Example
باقي خدامين بواحد الطريقة بدائية
ba9i khdamin b wa7d tari9a bida2iya
“They are still working with a primitive method.”
