“bota” (بوطة) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning butane gas cylinder.

Meanings

  2. gas stove

Usage

The boTa is the butane gas cylinder, found in most Moroccan homes. It supplies the cooker, the water heater and sometimes a heater. People say boTa d lgaz, boTa kbira (large) or boTa sghira (small, used with a camping stove). They also say tbeddel lboTa, "change the cylinder", when it is empty. By extension, the word sometimes means the small stove placed on top of the cylinder. It is a feminine word, informal and used every day. It has nothing to do with the French "botte" (boot).
