bri9 بريق

Moroccan Darija · noun

“bri9” (بريق) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning coffee pot.

Meanings

  1. coffee pot
  2. pitcher, jug with spout

Usage

Bri9 refers to the spouted vessel in which coffee is prepared or served, and more broadly a serving pot or jug. You mostly say bri9 dyal l-9ahwa, "a pot of coffee", with a verb such as 3mmer (to fill) or wjjed (to prepare). The word is masculine: l-bri9, bri9 kbir. It is not used for the teapot of mint tea, which is called berrad. It can be confused with the homonym in Standard Arabic meaning "shine, brilliance". That is not the meaning in everyday use.

Example

جيب البريق ديال القهوة للضياف

jib l-bri9 dyal l-9ahwa l-dyaf

“Bring the coffee pot to the guests.”
