chakhsiyan شخصيّا
Moroccan Darija · adverb
“chakhsiyan” (شخصيّا) is an adverb in Moroccan Darija meaning personally, in person.
Meanings
- personally, in person
- for my part, in my opinion
Usage
The adverb chakhsiyan comes from Standard Arabic and often keeps the ending -an, pronounced or not. It has two main uses. First it means "in person, directly": kan3rfo chakhsiyan, "I know him personally". It also introduces an opinion, like the English "personally": chakhsiyan ma3jbatnich, "personally, I didn't like it". In this second use, the more colloquial ana bach ngoul lik is also heard. The register is neutral to slightly formal. In writing, it is easily confused with chakhsiya, "personality".
Example
كاتعرفو شخصيا, داكشي علاش كاتفضّلو
kat3rfo chkhSyyan, dakchi 3lach katfDDlo
“You know him personally, that's why you favour him.”
