chedded شدّد

Moroccan Darija · verb

“chedded” (شدّد) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to be harsh, strict with someone.

Meanings

  1. to be harsh, strict with someone
  2. to tighten, intensify (controls, measures)
  3. to insist on, stress

Usage

Chedded is the intensive form of chedd. It is used mainly with the preposition 3la: chedded 3la wladu, "he is strict with his children". It is also used for controls or rules that are being tightened (chedded lmora9aba). The register is common but a bit more formal in administrative or media contexts, where the verb comes closer to Standard Arabic. The present tense is ychedded. Do not confuse this verb with chedd, which simply means "to hold" or "to close": chedded always implies strictness or a hardening of attitude.
