Meanings
- half of a match
- round, stage of a competition
Usage
The word chout mainly means each of the two halves of a football match: chout lowel (the first half), chout tani (the second half). It is heard constantly in sports commentary and in conversations between fans, for example to say that a team played better f chout tani. The plural is achwat. Note: in French, "mi-temps" also means the break between the two periods. For the break, people rather say la mi-temps or bayn chwatayn. Don't confuse it with chouta, "shot, kick", which comes from French "shoot".
