chrab الشراب
Moroccan Darija · noun
“chrab” (الشراب) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning alcohol, alcoholic drink.
Meanings
- alcohol, alcoholic drink
- wine
- drink
Usage
Chchrab means above all alcohol in general, and wine in particular. It does not mean just any drink, contrary to what the verb chreb (to drink) might suggest. Likewise, "kaychreb" used on its own often implies that he drinks alcohol. You say "kas dyal chchrab" for a glass of alcohol, and "mdmen 3la chchrab" for an alcoholic. As the subject is socially delicate, the word often carries a hint of disapproval. For an ordinary drink, people rather say "chi 7aja nchrbo".
