ddo الضو

Moroccan Darija · noun

“ddo” (الضو) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning light.

Meanings

  1. light
  2. electricity, power

Usage

Ddo means light, natural or artificial, and by extension electricity. The most frequent uses are "ch3el ddo" (turn on the light), "tfi ddo" (turn off the light), "ddo tqte3" (there's a power cut) and "lfatora dyal ddo" (the electricity bill). For daylight, people also say "ddo dyal nhar". It may seem surprising that the same word means both the lit bulb and the electrical grid. Context is usually enough to tell the two senses apart.
