dyya3 ضيّع
Moroccan Darija · verb
“dyya3” (ضيّع) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to lose, mislay.
Meanings
- to lose, mislay
- to waste (time, money)
- to neglect, leave abandoned
Usage
Dyye3 is a very common transitive verb. It first means to lose or mislay an object ("dyye3t sarout", I lost the key), then to waste: "dyye3ti li lwe9t" (you made me waste my time), "dyye3 flousou" (he squandered his money). It can also mean to neglect someone or something in one's care, for example one's children or one's studies. The present is kaydyye3. The passive or reflexive form tdyye3 means to get lost, to be wasted. Do not confuse it with mcha (to leave), which is also used to say that something has disappeared.
