fekhar فخار
Moroccan Darija · noun
“fekhar” (فخار) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning pottery, earthenware objects.
Meanings
- pottery, earthenware objects
- terracotta (material)
Usage
Fekhkhar refers to all objects made of baked clay: jars, tajines, dishes, pots, vases. For example, "tajine dyal lfekhkhar" means a clay tajine, as opposed to metal or cast iron. The word also names the material itself. The craftsman is the fekhkhari, and the potters' quarter or workshop may be called lfekhkhara. The term is common and neutral, at home as in the souk. For an English speaker, the main thing is to pronounce the kh consonant properly, often doubled in speech, without confusing it with fakhr (pride).
Example
شريت طاجين ديال الفخار من السوق
chrit tajine dyal lfekhkhar mn ssou9
“I bought a clay tajine at the souk.”
