Usage
The ferran is the neighborhood's communal oven. People bring bread prepared at home to have it baked there. By extension, the word also refers to the man who runs this oven. The expression ferran w qad b-7uma, "an oven that heats a whole neighborhood", is used to praise a very capable person who manages things for everyone. Another word, fran, comes from the French "frein" and is pronounced without the double r: fran dyal tomobil, "the car's brakes". Only context distinguishes the two.
