ferrouj فروج
Moroccan Darija · noun
“ferrouj” (فروج) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning rooster.
Meanings
- rooster
Usage
Ferrouj is the usual word for the rooster. For the hen, one says djaja. People often specify ferrouj beldi, the free-range rooster raised in the countryside, highly prized in cooking. The plural is fraryej. Watch out for a pitfall in writing: the same Arabic spelling can transcribe the French "feu rouge", pronounced fourouj, meaning a traffic light. Context tells the two apart. One also says dik, but ferrouj is more widespread in everyday use.
