ftour فطور
Moroccan Darija · noun
“ftour” (فطور) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning breakfast.
Meanings
- breakfast
- meal that breaks the fast
Usage
Ftour is the ordinary word for breakfast: one says "ftert" ("I had breakfast") and "kayn chi ftour?". During Ramadan, ftour refers to the meal eaten at sunset to break the fast. This meal often includes harira, dates and chebakia. Context resolves the ambiguity: in the middle of Ramadan, "waqt ftour" refers to the time of breaking the fast, not the morning. The related verb is ftar / yftar. The word is also used for a breakfast eaten in a group, for example in a café.
Example
واش كاين شي فطور
wach kayn chi ftor
“Is there anything for breakfast?”
