gbed ڭبض

Moroccan Darija · verb

“gbed” (ڭبض) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to catch, to grab.

Meanings

  1. to catch, to grab
  2. to arrest (someone)
  3. to hold, to take in hand

Usage

Gbed is the "g" pronunciation of qbed (often written 9bed), "to seize, to catch". It is heard in rural speech, in the East, in the South, and in part of urban speech. It is conjugated as follows: gbedt (I caught), ygbed (he catches), gbed! (catch!). It is used for an object one grabs, gbed lkora (catch the ball), but also for a person arrested by the police: gbduh (they arrested him). One also says gbed blastek (take your place, hold your position). Gbed and qbed have the same meaning. The "g" form simply sounds more regional.

ڭبض الكورة ودّيها
