ghled غلض
Moroccan Darija · verb
“ghled” (غلض) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to gain weight.
Meanings
- to gain weight
- to thicken, become thick
Usage
Ghleḍ is said of a person who puts on weight: ghleḍti chwiya, "you've put on a little weight". It is also said of something that becomes thicker, such as a sauce or a dough. It should be distinguished from the adjective ghliḍ, "fat, thick", which expresses a state rather than a change. The two forms are often confused in arabizi writing. Pointing out to someone that they have put on weight is common between close people. Elsewhere, it can offend. The opposite is ḍʿaf, "to lose weight".
Example
غلضتي شوية هاد العام
ghleDti chwiya had l3am
“You've put on a little weight this year.”
How to write it in Latin letters
