Moroccan Darija · noun

“hdiya” (هدية) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning gift, present.

Meanings

  1. gift, present
  2. calm, quiet (feminine)

Usage

Two words are written the same way in Arabic. The first, hdiya or hadiya, is the common word for a gift, given at a celebration, on returning from a trip or at a birth. For example: "jab lih hdiya" (he brought him a gift). The second, hadya, is the feminine of the adjective hadi (calm). It describes a peaceful place, person or situation: "blassa hadya" (a quiet place). Arabic script does not distinguish them. Context decides: if the word accompanies a feminine noun that it describes, it is the adjective.
