Meanings
- meeting
- gathering, assembly
Usage
Ijtima3 is the common word for a work, association or official meeting. It comes from Standard Arabic but is fully integrated into darija. It is used mainly with dar ("to do"): dar ijtima3, "to hold a meeting". One also says 3ndi ijtima3, "I have a meeting". The plural is ijtima3at. With the article, it is often pronounced ljtima3, swallowing the initial vowel. In offices, the French "réunion" is also frequently heard, sometimes in the same sentence. The word does not mean a simple get-together between friends: for that, one would rather say tlaqina.
Example
هوما غايمشيو يديرو اجتماع
houma ghaymchiw idirou ijtima3
“They are going to go hold a meeting.”
