jayza جائزة

Moroccan Darija · noun

“jayza” (جائزة) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning prize, award.

Meanings

  1. prize, award
  2. reward

Usage

Ja2iza refers to a prize awarded at a contest, competition or ceremony. It is also used for a reward in general. In everyday conversation it is most often pronounced jayza, the form ja2iza being closer to the written language. Typical constructions are "rbe7 jayza" (to win a prize) and "3ta jayza" (to award a prize). Don't confuse it with taman, which means price in the sense of cost. For a small gift, kado or hdiyya is used instead. Jayza is reserved for a distinction or something won.
