jedda جدّة
Moroccan Darija · noun
“jedda” (جدّة) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning grandmother.
Meanings
- grandmother
Usage
Jedda means grandmother. With a possessive, you say jeddti (my grandmother), jeddtek, jeddto. In Morocco, people also very often call their grandmother l7nina, an affectionate term. As in English, the word is also used to talk about the status of being a grandmother: "wellat jedda" (she has become a grandmother). In Arabic script without vowels, it can be confused with the name of the Saudi city of Jeddah, but context always resolves the ambiguity.

جدة توفت العام للي فات
jedda tweffat l3am lli fat
“My grandmother passed away last year.”
