“jism” (جسم) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning body (human or animal).

Meanings

Usage

Jism, often pronounced jsem, means the body, especially when talking about health, sport or physical appearance. In the most spontaneous speech, Moroccans also use ddat (ddati, "my body, myself") a lot to talk about tiredness or pain. Jism is more frequent in sporting or medical contexts, and in expressions like jismo mzyan, "he is well built". The word is understood everywhere but keeps a slightly standard-Arabic flavour; the plural ajsam is mostly learned.
