jmil جميل

Moroccan Darija · noun

“jmil” (جميل) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning favor, good turn.

Meanings

  1. favor, good turn
  2. beautiful, pretty (formal)

Usage

In darija, jmil is used mainly as a noun meaning "favor" or "good turn". People say dir m3aya wa7ed jjmil, "do me a favor". Someone who forgets the good done to them is called nekkar jmil, "ungrateful". As an adjective meaning "beautiful", jamil belongs rather to standard Arabic or a polished register. In conversation, people spontaneously say zwin. A phrase like "nhar jamil" therefore sounds bookish. It is better to say "nhar zwin".

عافاك دير معايا واحد الجميل

3afak dir m3aya wa7ed jjmil
