karta كارتا

Moroccan Darija · noun

“karta” (كارتا) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning bank card.

Meanings

  1. bank card
  2. card (ID, membership)

Usage

Karta refers mainly to the bank card, but also to other cards: ID card, loyalty or membership card. It is most often used with the article, lkarta, and specified when needed: lkarta dyal lbanka. This is a spelling variant of karTa, with the same pronunciation. The emphatic t is simply not marked here. For the playing card, karTa or lkarTa is used instead. Context is usually enough to tell the two meanings apart. The French "la carte" is also heard as is in conversation.

Example
