khalles خلّص
Moroccan Darija · verb
“khalles” (خلّص) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to pay, settle a sum.
Meanings
- to pay, settle a sum
- to repay a debt
- to pay someone (wages)
Usage
Khalles is the usual verb for "to pay" in Morocco. You pay for an item or service with the preposition 3la (khalles 3la l-qahwa, pay for the coffee), and you pay a person with a direct object (khalless-ni, pay me). With dîn (debt), it means to repay. The related noun is lkhlass, payment. The verb khles, without the doubled consonant, also exists, but it means "to be paid, be settled" or "to be finished". So do not confuse it with khalles, which is transitive. In the present, say kankhalles, and in the future ghadi nkhalles.
Example
شكون لي خلص؟
chkon li khals?
“Who paid?”
