l3robia العروبية
Moroccan Darija · noun
“l3robia” (العروبية) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning countryside, rural area.
Meanings
- countryside, rural area
- home village, native village
Usage
L3robiya means the countryside, as opposed to the city (lmdina). You say f l3robiya, "in the countryside", and mn l3robiya, "from the countryside". For many city dwellers, it is also the village of their parents or grandparents, where they spend holidays or festivals. The word is neutral, but it is linked to the adjective 3robi, "country" or "rustic". That adjective can become mocking or pejorative when applied to a person to call them a boor. So use it with caution when speaking about someone.
Example
الهوى نقي في العروبية
lhwa n9i f l 3robia
“The air is clean in the countryside.”
