l8ja لهجة
Moroccan Darija · noun
“l8ja” (لهجة) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning accent, way of speaking.
Meanings
- accent, way of speaking
- dialect, regional speech
Usage
Lhja (feminine) first refers to the accent of a person or a region. It is often used with dyal: lhja dyalek, lhja dyal chamal. It also refers to a regional speech variety: lhja l-hassaniya, lhja dyal Fès. In conversation, the loanword l'accent is also heard a lot in the same sense. The word is neutral and used in all registers. Pitfall: the article must be kept, whether the l is assimilated or not. One says 3jbatni lhja dyalek, and not "lhja-k" alone, because the dyal construction is the most natural.
Example
عجباتني لهجة ديالك
3jbatni lle8ja dyalek
“I like your accent.”
