lboudiya البودية
Moroccan Darija · noun
“lboudiya” (البودية) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning Buddhism.
Meanings
- Buddhism
Usage
Lboudiyya means Buddhism, the religion and spiritual tradition. The word comes from Standard Arabic but is pronounced the Moroccan way: the "dh" becomes "d", as in many learned words that have passed into the spoken language. It belongs to a rather educated register: you hear it when people talk about religions, travel in Asia or documentaries. It is almost always used with the article (lboudiyya). To say "Buddhist", use boudi or boudiyya, or the construction dyal lboudiyya, as in "ma3bed dyal lboudiyya", "a Buddhist temple". Be careful not to confuse it with similar-looking words related to "bouda" (Buddha).
Example
هادا ماعبد قديم ديال البوديّة
8ada ma3bed 9dim dyal lboudiyya
“This is an ancient Buddhist temple.”
