Meanings
- highway, motorway
Usage
Lotorout is a borrowing from French "l'autoroute", adapted to Moroccan pronunciation. The French article is fused to the word, as in many loanwords. It is in completely common use, much more than the Standard Arabic equivalent. It takes the usual prepositions: "f lotorout" (on the highway), "khdit lotorout" (I took the highway). One also speaks of the highway toll, called "lpéage". For many speakers the word is feminine, as in French. The register is neutral and everyday.
Example
خديت لوطوروت لكازا
khdit lotorout l casa
“I took the highway to Casablanca.”
