marka ماركا
Moroccan Darija · verb
“marka” (ماركا) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to score (a goal, point).
Meanings
- to score (a goal, point)
- to mark, note down
Usage
An adapted borrowing from French "marquer", conjugated like a darija verb: marka (he scored), markat (she scored), kanmarki (I score), ymarki (he scores). It is very common in football vocabulary, on the radio and among friends: one says marka goal or marka hdef for "he scored a goal". It is also used in the concrete sense of noting something down or making a mark on an object. Not to be confused with the noun marka, "brand" in the commercial sense, which is a different word. Register: informal and neutral.
Example
ماركا كول فاللخر ديال الماتش
marka goal f lkher dyal lmatch
“He scored a goal at the end of the match.”
