Meanings

  1. unemployed, out of work

Usage

Mchoumer comes from the French "chômeur". It was adapted into a darija participle, from the verb choumer, "to be unemployed". The word is very common and is used mostly as a predicate: rah mchoumer, "he is unemployed". It is often used to talk about young graduates without work. The feminine is mchoumra and the plural mchoumrin. The word can also be used humorously for someone who has nothing to do. The corresponding noun is choumaj, "unemployment". A more Arabic-rooted synonym is bla khedma, "without work".
