mdiye9 مضيّق

Moroccan Darija · adjective

“mdiye9” (مضيّق) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning narrow, tightened.

Meanings

  1. narrow, tightened
  2. tight, too snug (clothing)
  3. narrowed

Usage

mDiyye9 is the participle of Diyye9, "to narrow, tighten", from the root of Diye9, "narrow". It describes a street, a passage, a room or a garment that has been tightened or is too snug. Feminine mDiyy9a, plural mDiyy9in. For natural narrowness, the simple adjective Diye9 is more common. mDiyye9 rather stresses the result: trousers that have been altered, a road narrowed by roadworks. The register is everyday. Figuratively, being oppressed or uneasy is rather said mDiye9 l-khater or Diq.

Example

السروال مضيّق بزاف، ما نقدرش نلبسو.

s-serwal mDiyye9 bzzaf, ma n9derch nlbso.

“The trousers are too tight, I can't wear them.”
