mdoubl مضوبل
Moroccan Darija · adjective
“mdoubl” (مضوبل) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning lined, doubled.
Meanings
- lined, doubled
- doubled (price, quantity)
Usage
mDoubl is a borrowing from French "double," integrated into Arabic morphology with the participle prefix m-. It describes something that has been doubled or exists in two copies: a layer, a fabric, a portion, a price. It agrees in the feminine (mDoubla) and the plural (mDoublin). The corresponding verb is Doubel. The word is informal and very common in speech, especially in trade and daily life. The more formal register uses a phrase with juj (two) or msa3f instead. Note that it is not used as a noun: to say "a duplicate," the French word is often kept.
Example
هاد الثوب مضوبل، ما كيبانش من التحت.
had t-tob mDoubl, ma kaybanch mn t-teHt.
“This fabric is lined, you can't see through it.”
