Moroccan Darija · noun
“merti” (مرتي) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning my wife.
Meanings
- my wife
Usage
Merti is the possessive form of mra (woman) followed by the suffix -i (my). It is the most common and neutral way to say "my wife" in Morocco, both within the family and among friends. For other persons, the suffix changes: mratek (your wife), mratou (his wife), mratna (our wife). Watch out: mra alone means "woman" in the general sense, but with a possessive the meaning is almost always "wife". In a more respectful or formal register, some people say zawjti or "l'madame dyali" instead. The expression "bghitek tkouni merti" is used to propose marriage.
